Southern Ky. Woman Hit By Car While Crossing Road

Ky. Highway 39, just north of Somerset, was shut down much of the morning after the accident about 8:15 a.m.Tuesday.

Police say a woman was simply crossing the road, going to get her mail when she was hit.

Her home was on one side of busy Hwy. 39, yet her mailbox was on the other side. Now police are trying to figure out if the elderly woman didn't see the car, if the driver of the car didn't see her or a combination of both.

The victim has been identified as 86-year-old Christine Reed. She's in critical condition at UK.

The driver of the car, 42-year-old Gale Hart, was transported to Lake Cumberland Hospital.

Police say they do not expect to file charges.
