Elderly Woman Hit By Car Along Highway 39

A southern Kentucky woman is in the hospital after being hit by a car.

Police say an elderly woman was crossing Highway 39 going to check her mail when a car slammed into her. The woman was hit about 8:15am Tuesday. Highway 39 was shut down much of the morning as a result of the accident.

Police say they don't know why the woman was hit. She lives in a house on Highway 39 and her mailbox is on the other side of the road. Now police are trying to figure out if the woman didn't see the car, if the driver of the car didn't see her, or a combination of both.

Police are not releasing the elderly woman's name. She is being treated for multiple injuries at UK Medical Center in Lexington.
