Accused Cop Killer Ruled Competent To Stand Trial

The man accused of shooting a small town police chief is competent to stand trial.

A Powell County judge ruled Wednesday morning that Jamie Barnett can go on trial next week.

Barnett is accused of killing Clay City Police Chief Randy Lacy last summer. Barnett was the the backseat of Lacy's cruiser when the chief was shot and killed by his own gun.

Another hearing will have to take place before the trial starts. At issue: whether or not Barnett's IQ is too low for him to face the death penalty.

A psychiatrist testified on Wednesday morning that she believes Barnett was faking a low IQ during testing.

hey just thinking, before you go making a comment about cheif having a weapon in his car get the whole story. this is powell county, arrest someone once you get to know them, hewas a andy griffith type. i mean no disrespect when i say that, he was a good man that got an undeserved consequence.

Note to just thinking from ky; you are correct on your statement, however that was not the issue in this story. The mistakes of Chief Lacy were covered before by me. He messed up and paid for it with his life. This is about what to do with the other guy.

I could tell you that he was faking it if some one know that if they get a low IQ they will not be put to death. I don't care what drugs you do if you don't what to paid for it don't do them in the first place.

I am sure he was faking the answers on his IQ testing; he is dumb, but not dumb enough to answer truthfully so that they can fry him!

If you are competent and coherent enough to operate a gun to kill someone, you are competent and coherent enough to stand trial and get the death penalty if appropriate. In this case, yes, it is appropriate.
