LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Many Kentuckians will spend Black Friday hitting the stores, with credit cards in hand.
However, some credit cards can give you more bang for your buck than others.
When Michelle Genardi does her holiday shopping at Target, she always uses her Target credit card.
"I get five percent off every time I use my card at Target or target.com, and I receive that discount right at the purchase," Genardi said.
Most major retailers offer in-store credit cards that offer some kind of discount. However, experts say there's a downside if you carry a balance.
"You definitely need to pay that bill off, as the interest rates are so much higher than your standard credit card," Alex Matjanec of MyBankTracker said.
Several traditional credit cards also offer cash back. Some credit card companies provide additional savings if you shop through their website. Some offer free extended warranties for big ticket items.
Many cards also give you the option of building points that can later be redeemed for goods or services.
If you plan to purchase a gift card, check to see if your credit card company offers a discount.
The Better Business Bureau says if you can't use a credit card, layaway is sometimes an option. However, it's important to understand each store's layaway policies before you make that decision.
