Fire Department Under Investigation

A central Kentucky fire department is being told it has to pay back thousands of dollars to the state.

The Kentucky Fire Commission says the Frankfort Fire Department handed out bonuses firefighters didn't deserve.

It says four firefighters were paid for training either they didn't finish or weren't qualified for.

The Fire Commission has ordered the Frankfort Fire Department to pay back nearly 30 thousand dollars. Frankfort fire officials say they'll appeal.

I don't think the state is asking too much here. First off I am a volunteer firefighter so I know first hand that firefighters simply aren't paid no where near enough. However I am going to agree with the state here and say if bonuses were to be appointed for training completed and training was not completed then guess what money should not have been awarded. It really is a simple concept. However I would have to say that since it was a city official that made this error it should be the city only that refunds the state on this deal not the firefighter

Sorry Gavin, but you can't blame this on McCain. He isn't even President yet. Firefighters are severly underpaid but that is still no excuse for not doing what was asked of them. If you agree to do a job for x amount, then you should do the job. You agreed to it so do it.

I am sure there is more to the story than meets the eye here. The sad thing is, in Nicholasville, we have the opposite problem for our firefighters. They complete various types of training, sometimes at their OWN EXPENSE, and then do NOT get paid for it, either by bonus or way of pay raise. Go figure........

I, think the trial on Jamie Barnett needs to go to the state capital. I mean he is suspected of killing a police officer. And that is a serious crime, right. So i think he needs to go against a federal judge. I mean i live in powell county and Mt. Sterling is not very far away from Powell County. And believe me i think he still will not have a fair trial.

What's the difference most CEO's don't deserve the bonuses they receive.

Tabatha; Look at your spelling. First word didn't, risk, lives, realize, don't, realize, you are & should't. I agree with you. Support your local firefighter.

I think the issue the Fire Commission has is that they gave money to FFD for the firefighters to do something, they didn't do it, but still handed out the money. I don't think anyone on the Commission will tell you that firefighters are overpaid, they know as well as the rest of us that our emergency services are the worst paid but most needed people we have in our cities/counties. Their beef is that it's illegal to take money for doing something, not doing it, but keeping the money. If FFD wants to give the firefighter's raises, the city has to pay for it, not circumvent the system and let the state pay for it instead. So, if they didn't get the training that they were paid for, then the city should pay the money back to the state.

Everyone does things that are wrong, and taking money that doesnt belong to you is absolutely one of those things. A friend of mine has a dad thats a vol. firefighter and he risks all the time. Sadly not everyone is like that.
