Fort Knox Commander Retires

FORT KNOX, Ky. (AP) - Friends say retiring Fort Knox garrison commander Col. Mark Needham is an astute observer of details.

Needham uses that trait to help him understand the big picture.

Officials on and off the Army post in central Kentucky say it helped Needham spearhead a partnership with the surrounding community as the installation undergoes an expansive transformation.

Needham arrived at Fort Knox in 2005 shortly after the Pentagon announced a base realignment plan that will relocate the post's Armor Center but shifted thousands of soldiers and jobs to the area.

A change of command ceremony was held at the post Friday. Col. Rick Schwartz will succeed Needham in the position.
