Police say a 35-year-old Lexington man was shot and killed in the driveway of a home on Lindy Lane that he shares with his mother.

Fayette County coroner Gary Ginn says it appears 35-year-old Derrick Stewart was shot at least one time sometime early Friday morning. A neighbor found Stewart's body just before 7:00 a.m.

Police had responded to the neighborhood in the middle of the night after someone reported hearing gunshots. They didn't find anything suspicious.

Greg Fath lives nearby. He told 27 NEWSFIRST that he heard something that sounded like fireworks overnight and didn't think to call police.

Authorities are now trying to track down who Stewart might have had contact with prior to his death and where he was.

If you have any information on the case, you're asked to contact the Lexington Police Department at (859) 258-3600.

Stewart's body is undergoing an autopsy at the state medical examiner's office in Frankfort.

Let me start off by sending my condolensces to the family. I personally do not know this young man, however, as a young African American male, I find this truly saddening as another young black male has lost his life without cause or reason. In addition, I find it very disturbing that WKYT and other stations would have to take addtional steps to explain this brothers past history even though he is no longer here and his family has to deal with the pain of losing their loved one and face the media in this manner. Shame on WKYT and others stations! Again, my condolensces to the family!

What is this world coming to when you can't even walk to your home with out bobbin and weaving. This is someones child regardless of what he did or used to do he deserved to live. Somebody out theirs knows something and you need to be talking because could be you or your loved one. Fast easy money is killing our young people. To the family you are in my thoughts and prayers God Bless you.
