Grandfather, Grandson Die In Motorcycle Crash

What should have been a fun bike ride for a grandfather and his grandson ended tragically for the family.

It happened late Friday night on Blackburn Avenue in Ashland right in front of Oakview Elementary School.

Police say the driver of this truck was under the influence and crossed the center line, colliding head-on with a motorcycle.

The grandfather and his grandson were on the bike. The grandfather died.

His young passenger was severely injured and had to be air-lifted to a Huntington hospital. As for the driver of the truck, police arrested him. He's charged with driving under the influence.

“It's unfortunate when an operator makes that decision to get behind the wheel; it is like a loaded weapon. It will change this man's life and the families of the others in this crash,” says Capt. Todd Kelley of Ashland Police Department.

This is now a criminal investigation. Once complete, the driver of the truck may face more severe charges.

As long as stores and gas stations are allowed to sell cold beer there will be drunk drivers. Instead they ought to store it at 100 degrees instead of ice cold. Most business tend to keep their beer colder than their soda. My condolences go out to this family. I believe that when someone makes the decision to drink and drive he / she should be charged with murder because everyone knows that drinking impairs you physically as well as mentally.

Here is another example people killed for someone eles stupid mistake to drink and drive. It really makes me mad. There is no reason this should be happening over and over like it is. There should be tougher laws for drinking and driving.Maybe people would think before they drink, or at least make plans to have a driver.

A person drinks, decides to get behind the wheel of a vehicle, and then kills someone and all they are charged with is DUI? What a load of bull. The driver should be charged with murder or vehicular homicide or some similar charge. Mr./Ms. County Attorney, I encourage you to be stern and set an example. As a member of the AMA and an operator of a motorcycle, I hear all to often of this type of situation and the one who was DUI received a slap on the wrist. With an example like that, it's no wonder people drink and drive, and sometimes kill someone. My condolences to the family for their loss. I hope the attorney for the prosecution does the right thing.
