Environmental experts spent the day Friday at a Pike County junkyard that caught fire on Thursday night.

The fire burned out-of-control at a junkyard, KW Metals, located directly behind Belfry High School. It took 14 differed agencies about 8 hours to put out the flames.

Police evacuated people from several homes near the junkyard and witnesses could hear explosions.

Crews shut off both power and a natural gas line in the area because of safety concerns for people in the area.

Even though the fire burned for a a long time, there are no reports of any structural damage at the junkyard.

EPA officials were on the scene on Friday because there was concern about the contamination of both soil and water in the area.

Power has been restored in the area.

The fire was severe my dad the chief came all the way from work in Phelps, Kentucky. There were people driving over just to see what was going on. Everybody was worried sick. The fire started at around 7:20pm and ended at around 4:00am. All the firemen and Fire Departments worked together to finally get the job done.
