One man is in the hospital after a shooting outside a Perry County business.

Police say 32-year-old Jerry Jent shot 37-year-old Nelson Scott Martin in the parking lot of Joe's Starter and Alternator Shop in Hazard.

One witness says he heard people yelling about a man with a gun just outside his business.

"I looked out the door and sure enough, I saw somebody looked like they had a gun waving it around and pointing and screaming," says Larry Blair.

Blair says it looked like the two men were arguing in the parking lot of Joe's Starter and Alternator Shop. He says the shooter pulled the gun out of his pick up truck.

Blair says, "He had the door open, but it looked like he just kept reaching it in there, grabbing it out and then he put it back, grabbing it and putting it back."

Witnesses say Nelson Scott Martin was hit with a "bird-shot" at a close range by Jent. Blair says Jent continued to argue after Martin was shot.

"He stayed for maybe 3 or 4 minutes and then after that he pulled off, and then after that, cops pulled up about 10, 15 seconds later," says Blair.

Jent didn't make it far before he was spotted by police.

Trooper Tony Watts says, "He had left the scene in a pick up truck, we were given a description and we were on our way to the scene of the shooting. We met the vehicle and made a felony traffic stop on it."

Jerry Jent was arrested along Highway 80 and is in the Kentucky River Regional Jail charged with first degree assault. Nelson Scott Martin is at Hazard ARH in serious condition.

I am Scott Martin's wife and to Caperton- apparently you have never been taught that if you don't know what you are talking about then the best thing to do is keep your comments to yourself. Scott went into the alternator shop to SURPRISE! check on an alternator. The man who shot him pulled in after Scott and although the two did argue, it had nothing to do with drugs. Scott is the victim in this and for people to judge him because of what happened TO HIM is pathetic. Perhaps people who automatically think "drug deal" need to look at themselves. Nuff said.
