Stolen Road Signs Causing Major Problems

They tell us where to go, but thieves in Rockcastle County are making driving a little harder now that road signs are turning up missing.

Officials in Rockcastle County are investigating just who is responsible for stealing a large number of road signs over the past few months.

"Sometimes we'll put them up on Friday and by Monday morning they're down again", says Buzz Carloftis, the Rockcastle Co. Judge-Executive.

Recently in one weekend, 56 road signs were taken in an area in the county. Judge-Executive Buzz Carloftis thinks he know why.

"Probably thought they were getting metal, but ours are a fiberglass, so there's no value, but they are a great value to the county", says Judge Carloftis.

Emergency officials in particular have recently realized how valuable the signs are. Having missing signs has been a big problem when responding to those needing help.

"It's very dangerous when you go out and can't reach someone because a sign is gone and someone needs to be in the hospital", says Judge Carloftis.

To stop this from happening, the county is using a combination of work release inmates, those serving community service, or volunteers to make new signs made from fiberglass.

Not only is this saving the county thousands of dollars to make their own signs, but Judge Carloftis is hoping it will keep people from taking them, making things a little easier on everyone.

"We're hoping people will get tired of tearing them down especially because they have no value", says Judge Carloftis.

Meanwhile Judge Carloftis says the more signs being stolen, that means the more tax money having to be spent to replace them.

He says for those caught stealing road signs, they will be charged and have to pay a fine or do community service.

I just wanted to make a comment here , Who ever this Toneisha is , she is making comments on everything on here about Rockcastle county. Like I have stated on the other boards to her , about Rockcastle, Yes , we are a small community... BUT I lived in Lexington for a longtime , and yes , there is missing stop signs there too , and central air units being stolen , and people getting raped , and meth labs , etc. IT IS EVERYWHERE GIRL, get a grip.. You have some sort of personal problem with us here , then stay as far away as you can.. We do not want you here, you are not welcome here. Have you ever went to the Food Stamp office on Liberty Road and just looked at how many cars are there ? Go try that , go look and see that people in Lexington get government help just as well as people everywhere . Go thru the Woodhill area of Lexington and then tell me that Lexington is a better place..

A community watch program would probably catch these kids. Incidently, Toneisha's jerking your chain people, its probably some kid with a made up name trying to get you riled, why not just ignore it.

Wow, Toneisha who done you so wrong in Rockcastle? You have been posting some stupid stuff on both stories about our town. Grow up! Stupid stuff goes on everywhere, not just here, but all across the USA. There are so many more important things we should all be worrying about. I so hope something is done about the animal shelter, that was really sad. The signs are probably being took by some young people who thinks it cool to see how many they can get without being caught. I hope that you can one day overcome whatever has made you such a bitter person.

More than likely, it is teenagers out having a "good time" taking the signs. I'm 39 now and I'm ashamed to say that I was part of a crowd that went around taking down signs back in central KY where I grew up. Teenagers have been doing this for a long time. They don't think of the consequences: 1)that emergency personnel need them to find folks in an emergency and that someone's life could depend on that sign and 2)they don't think about any penalties of getting caught. It is an adrenaline rush for them to make off with the sign without being seen. Teenagers don't think and more often than not when they do it is faulty thinking. I was one, I've raised 2 and I've taught hundreds of them over the course of my career as a teacher. Most schools no longer have driver's ed for teenagers. That would be a great place for kids to hear about the ramifications of taking the signs. Parents need to address this with their kids. Some will listen and some won't. What else can we do?

Toneisha, the people who live in Rockcastle County are the same type of people you would find anywhere in the state... You are sooo close minded! Stuff happens EVERYWHERE!!!! Even here in Lexington! Yes, I agree there is a BIG problem with the number of people who are on welfare, but please don't single out one county...

I live in Rockcastle Co and take offense to your ignorant comment. For starters the signs are NOT metal.Try to re-read the story and open your judgmental ears to the news before spouting off. I have a full set of teeth(my own) and do not receive welfare. While there are several here in the county that I am sure receive help from the government, I am sure that the splendid place you live also has people down on their luck or too sorry to work.As far as the smell....try going down the interstate thru your county. Sewer smell and pollution. This happens all over the place and Rockcastle Co is no different. With the exception that an idiot like you don't live here!!! Thank goodness!!!!!

Look around, this is a problem in every comunity and it is teens and other young people that collect these signs that are doing it never stopping to think one of their family could need an emergency service and they can`t find their address because of it. I don`t think many signs are stolen for scrap as the scrapyards are not going to buy a few dozen signs from anyone.

Make their sorry butts make new signs and spend their weekends guarding them wearing a sign stating they stole one now they are guarding this one.

See, just another classic example of the type of people that live in that smelly county. I dont have to say anything, just re-read the story above.... losers stealing signs for metal...toothless rednecks without jobs on welfare stealing to make 5 dollars.
