Whole Foods Recalls Beef, Kentucky Stores Included

LEXINGTON, KY -- Whole Foods Market is recalling fresh ground beef sold in 24 states, including Kentucky, from June 2 to Aug. 6 because of possible contamination with E. coli bacteria, according to the Associated Press and the Louisville Courier-Journal.

The company has received reports that seven people in Massachusetts and two in Pennsylvania who shopped at Whole Foods became ill, spokeswoman Libba Letton said.

Whole Foods has a store at 4944 Shelbyville Road in Louisville as well one in Lexington, Ky., and two in the Indianapolis area. Letton said there are no reports of illnesses in Kentucky or Indiana. She said employees have been fielding customer questions.

"They wanted specifics about which beef is a problem (or whether) all the beef in the case here today is fine, and we've been assuring them that it is," she said.

Letton said the company's recalled beef was processed at the same Nebraska Beef plant linked to the E. coli outbreak this summer.

Whole Foods Market of Austin, Texas, is asking customers who may have purchased ground beef from June 2 though Aug. 6 to dispose of the product and return to the store with the packaging or receipt for a refund. For more information, consumers can call (512) 542-0878.

Courier-Journal reporter Peter Smith and The Associated Press contributed to this story.
