Many businesses are struggling with the sluggish economy, but one business in eastern Kentucky is providing jobs for more than 700 people, and they're still growing.
Officials with Sykes Enterprises say eastern Kentucky is the perfect place to start a new business.
The Sykes Call Center in Perry County takes calls for two major clients, and as the company continues to grow, so does the number of employees.
Site Director Chris Melton says, "August 5th of last year we had zero employees; today, we're almost 650. So to reach that milestone in less than a year, we needed to hire as many people as we have."
"The infrastructure, for the whole region has been improved by millions and millions of dollars by Sykes relocating at the Coal Field Industrial Park," says Hazard Mayor Bill Gorman.
Sykes employees come from five local counties, and work closely with the Hazard Community and Technical College to get trained for the job.
"We put them through a six-day course at the college in two three-day increments, to where it prepares them to be a better employee both for Sykes and that client," says Melton.
Melton says Eastern Kentucky is the perfect place to bring any new business. "I think we've proven that several different types of industries can come into this area and be successful."
"This area has got wonderful people. They're industrious, they're dedicated, and most anybody that starts a business up here is successful," adds Mayor Gorman.
Melton says Sykes offers a competitive opportunity for higher paying jobs in eastern Kentucky. He also says as Sykes continues to grow and promote internally, the company will hire people on a monthly basis.
