A 13-year-old girl is credited with saving her family and her neighbors from a fire.

The fire started in a garage on Ashton Drive, off Winchester Road near New Circle Road early Wednesday Morning.

The 31-year-old girl, Kaylin Stallard, says she woke up to the smell of smoke and saw flames coming out of her neighbor's detached garage.

Stallard says she woke up her sister and mother, who called 9-1-1. Meanwhile, she says she ran next door to wake up her neighbors.

When firefighters arrived, flames had already engulfed the garage, which sits between the two homes. Both homes had also caught fire.

Linda Merritt says her daughter, Melissa Wiles, has lived next door to Stallard for more than two years. She lost her car and two beloved dogs in the garage fire.

"She's pretty upset. We all are," Merritt said.

Merritt says her daughter is thankful Stallard woke her up.

"We're very grateful. We've hugged her and thanked her," she said.

A woman suffered smoke inhalation and was treated at the scene. A firefighter also fell off a ladder fighting the fires, but is OK.

Merritt says she doesn't know how the fire started because she says there were no utilities connected to the garage. There is smoke damage to both homes.

Both families have been placed in motels. The official cause of the fire is still under investigation.
