Thursday was a day for the history books in Richmond where the first store in the all-new Richmond Centre opened for business.

Goody's clothing held its grand opening Thursday in the huge new shopping complex just off I-75.

Richmond Centre, which covers nearly 200 acres, will soon have 800,000 square feet of retail space, as well as a theater complex and several restaurants.

More openings are expected next month.

Yes, you Richmond residents are so educated and sophisticated. I find it so amusing how highly the upper echelon of Madison Co. hold their esteem.

More trash, more traffic, more crime. Yep, just what I need in my backyard. In 20 years, these mega shopping centers will become obsolete and we'll be back to building malls again. It's like deja vu all over again.

Note to SANDY in LONDON: Please leave all the rednecks down in London. We have too many coming in from Irvine as it is already.

You've come a long way baby. Now get in the kitchen and fix me a pot pie!

Of course all this new stuff sounds good because its closer to the interstate and gets out of town customers. But whats the story on richmond mall? All that will be left is maybe footlocker and sears. How long will they stay? All that space just across from another dead shopping center that now houses a office depot directly across from the 5 year old office max. Who thinks these things out when they leave dead warehouse space in the middle of richmond.

Now the Richmond Mall has a gaping anchor position empty. In fact, all of the larger stores in the mall are currently holding going out of business sales. Is progress really being made if everything is just relocating instead of new businesses coming to the area? As for Goody's, it is the same reason that EW James pulled out of Lexington, advertising is just too expensive in the Herald Leader. The Richmond Register and surrounding papers offer a much better rate for the inserts, thus making advertising costs for these retailers much less in the surrounding area. There really is no other medium to circulate print advertising in the Lexington metro.

WooHoo! We are finally getting there! Once all of the stores get in there it will be nice! At least we will have a choice of driving down the street or driving to Lexington.
