A group of Girl Scouts in Perry County is trying to make life for soldiers in Afghanistan a little sweeter.

Over 500 boxes of cookies are all being donated to soldiers overseas, from Eastern Kentucky.

Makayla Burris, a Girl Scout, says, “I'm here today because I'm actually proud to give cookies to soldiers.”

Stephanie Wooton, a Girl Scout Leader, says “There is a gentleman that just came back from over seas and we're going to present the cookies to him today. He knows nothing about it it's a surprise.”

Hershel Cowell, with the U.S. Army, says, “Well they just told me I needed to come over here and help the Girls Scouts pack up some cookies and we I come in and saw the camera I know what was going on.”

Girl Scout Leaders say it's about teaching the girls to help others while also learning about the world around them.

Kennedy Bailey, a Girl Scout, says, “I want to be able to know that I can say that I was one of them people helping the people down where they are doing war and those kids down there. I want to be able to help them.”

Madison Combs says, “They really do need all the attention they can get because they've worked so hard for America.”

The girl's say it's time to give back.

Cowell says, even though they're so far away, getting care packages like this one makes them feel a little closer to home. “We'll you know you could have the worst day of your life you know and everything feels down and out, but when you go in and they holler mail call and you got four or five packages, it just brightens you're day up.”

Cowell says, away from home, the men and women he works with are like family and he just looks forward to sharing the cookies with them. “They said they were going to put my name on one of the boxes so I could pass them out to some of the soldiers and some of the little kids.”

Madison Combs says, “They're probably going to enjoy them because they're really good.

Hopefully, the cookies will make the soldiers day a little sweeter.

Girl Scout Leaders say the Army National Guard helps the group by letting them use their facility.

Thank you to the wonderful troop of Girl Scouts. May God continue to bless you all. Thank you for recognizing the service men and women of our country who fight daily for OUR freedom! :)
