Suicide is something experts say people don't talk about enough. Next week is National Suicide Prevention Week, and one group is working to educate people on what you can do to prevent someone from taking their own life.

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death for Kentuckians. An estimated 3,000 people in the state attempt suicide and over 500 of them die.

Members of the Kentucky Suicide Prevention Group say if you see the warning signs, get professional help immediately. Some of those signs are threatening one's self, talking or writing about death, and rage or withdrawal.

Experts say don't assume the issue will go away, and ask directly, “Are you thinking about killing yourself?”

Donna McGee with Appalachian Regional Healthcare Psychiatric Center says, “I’ve been in that situation before, where it took me over three hours to talk to someone, to the point where she said, “Yes, I am considering suicide.” It’s a very important question to ask.”

Experts say by putting the issue out in the open, it will let people know there are other options, and hopefully, this will save lives.
