Eric Wilson was mowing his lawn when friends and neighbors say a gust of wind knocked down a tree branch, killing the 10-year-old boy.

It happened Sunday afternoon in Simpsonville. That's in Shelby County.

His neighbors say he was working quickly to finish the job so he could go over to a friends house for a sleepover.

And they still can't get over the fact that he just happened to be under a tree when a large gust blew through the area.

His friends will remember how polite and respectful he was, almost saying he was like a little man, but at the same time enjoyed just being a kid.

He loved all sports and had a bright future.

Now, the community is mourning this tragic loss. The family is working on the funeral arrangements.

my thoughts and prayers are with the family also. and just for the record, i do not think 10 is too young to use a lawn mower.

Ok, leave the family alone! There is nothing wrong with a 10 year old using a mower if they are taught! Sounds like this childs parents were teaching him values and hard work pays off! A sleep over on Sunday night there is nothing wrong with that sounds like to me he was earning it. Yes, the winds were bad and everyone needed to be monitoring but it didn't keep us inside all day. There were lulls and you could get out for a bit. This is a tragedy for this family. My prayers are with you during this time. May God Bless You.

I am so sorry to hear of this tragic event, Erics family are in my thoughts and prayers. He may have wanted to get the lawn done so he wouldn't have to cut his sleepover short and do the lawn then, but I do wonder why this was on Sunday, who lets their child have a sleepover on a Sunday night? My very mature son is eleven going on 20, but I won't let him use a lawn mower. God Bless You All.

If you question as to why a 10 year old was outside mowing the lawn in the bad weather, there is a possibility it won't happen again. If you remain quiet about it; history can and will repeat itself.

I hate to hear stuff like this. God bless the family. The little boy is in heaven, no doubt. I didn't know him but he sounds like a special little guy.

I don't think that now is the time to judge whether a parent was doing the right thing or not by allowing their child to work outside.

Let's not judge the circumstances surrounding the incident. I'm sure his parents are hurting enough. They're certainly in my prayers. What a precious loss. My heart hurts for them all.
