Lexington Paper Cuts 22 Jobs

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - The Lexington Herald-Leader announced Wednesday it is laying off 22 workers due to sharp revenue declines
in the media industry.

Publisher Timothy Kelly announced the layoffs in a memo to the staff, the newspaper reported on its Web site. The paper said besides the layoffs there were 13 buyouts and elimination of some open positions.

The cuts represent an 11 percent reduction in the paper's work force and are among the 1,150 jobs being eliminated company-wide for the McClatchy Co. Similar reductions at the paper were announced three months ago.

The Herald-Leader has eliminated 71.5 positions since the beginning of the year. Employees whose jobs are cut will receive severance pay, health benefits and outplacement services.

I think it's really sad. But, many of them need to understand that the newspaper industry was never meant to sustain anyone at a comfortable salary. If you want that, don't go into journalism. McClatchy needs to start trimming the fat--starting with the overpaid editors at the top.

One can only hope that one of the 22 workers being let go is Marlene Davis. The newspaper would be much improved and possibly could see an increase in subscriptions.
