House Fire Raises Concern

Crews are now cleaning up after a fire damages a home in Jessamine County, but neighbors say the response time could have been shorter.

It took several fire crews to put out the fire on Old Coach Road, that investigators say was started by a child playing with a lighter.

Neighbors say a fire hydrant just across the street was out of service, causing an unnecessary delay. They say a fire station near the neighborhood was also closed for the weekend.

This is why the volunteer service (that was "closed" for the weekend, aka not manned) should be discontinued. A county this size that is continuing to grow by leaps and bounds needs FULL time fire protection, county wide, not just in the city. People in these expensive homes should be appalled that they only have full-time fire protection 2/3 of the time. Contact good ol C.M. at City Hall and ask him about annexing all of these areas into the city coverage area. Remind him when you call that he is running for State Rep and could use your vote. Also, show up to the commissioner's meetings at City Hall. I do have to agree with TakeResponsibility, though - parents should take responsibility for this, too. The child should not have been playing with the lighter!

First of all- the fire dept cannot help when a person who lives in the area is the one who disabled it via michevious activity. Second, the fire station is never "closed" the Jessamine County Fire District does not man that station 24/7 but its members are on call 24/7 to respond to that station to get the trucks if needed to go to a fire.

I'm dumbfounded by people's inability to take responsibility for their actions in this nation anymore. In this case, a house burned, and people are saying the fire department wasn't fast enough, and an out of service hydrant was to blame also. From my chair, I see that the CHILD WHO WAS LEFT TO PLAY WITH A LIGHTER was the cause of this fire, and if parents would watch their kids (or don't leave fire-makers out for kids to get), then it wouldn't have matter how fast (or slow) the FD responded, or whether the hydrant had water in it or not. Stop blaming everyone else for your problems and take personal responsibility for the actions you took which actually CAUSED the problem in the first place. Don't blame the city, state, or fed govt for not fixing your problems fast enough, that's not their responsibility...you take care of yourself and those in your care and you won't have to rely on others to fix all your problems. OK enough of my rant.
