It turns out a couple suspected of stealing checks from a woman in Breathitt County and using them in Laurel County have been behind bars in Perry County for weeks.
Kenneth Robinson admitted he stole checks from a purse at the Jackson Wal-Mart late last month. He's now in the Kentucky River Regional Jail. His wife, Arbutis Mize posted a $5,000 bond and is on house arrest.
Officials say surveillance video shows them inside a London Kroger using the stolen checks the same day they were taken from the victim's purse. Police say some were also passed at other businesses for cigarettes and gas. Robinson says he thinks he stole about $400 from the victim.
"I wish I could go back and redo it you know, and not do it but I can't. All I can do is tell the lady I'm sorry and try to make it right to her if she'll give me a chance to do that. If not, I guess, you know, whatever," said Robinson during a jailhouse interview.
Officials say at the time of their arrests, Robinson and Mize were wearing the same outfits as the couple in surveillance video.
They are both charged in Laurel County with five counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument. Mize is charged in Perry County with forgery and theft by unlawful taking. She's due in court Monday.
The couple was arrested in Hazard August 31st.
