3 Madison County inmates charged in jail beating

RICHMOND, Ky. (AP) - Three inmates of the Madison County Detention Center have been charged in the beating of another prisoner.

Jailer Doug Thomas told the Richmond Register (http://bit.ly/1cnwomq ) the three were charged with second-degree felony assault after the incident on Monday.

The charges were filed against 20-year-old Justin White, 22-year-old Tony Gay and 19-year-old Boyd Neely.

Thomas said jail video did not show the beating, but did show the three entering the cell of 41-year-old Billy Shearer. Later, Shearer was taken to University of Kentucky Hospital with injuries. He remained there Tuesday.

Thomas said overcrowding has increased tension at the jail. The 195-bed jail had 280 inmates Tuesday.
