Judge May Rule Soon On Release Of Prisoners

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A Franklin County circuit judge says he wants more time and information before deciding whether to block Kentucky's early prisoner release program.

Judge Phillip J. Shepherd said Thursday he may rule on a temporary injunction by the end of next week.

Attorney General Jack Conway contends that Kentucky's plan to save money by releasing thousands of prisoners early is unconstitutional and should be stopped. His office filed a lawsuit Wednesday seeking to block state's money-saving plan that has opened prison doors for thieves, sex offenders and murderers.

Lawmakers sought to ease the state's financial woes by approving the early release plan earlier this year.
