We continue our Breast Cancer Series looking at innovation in diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

Better treatments are helping many women live longer, healthier lives.

It's more than a mammogram for diagnosing breast cancer. MRIs and nuclear scans are just some of the ways Dr. Jain says breast cancer has changed over the years.

“Today we can diagnose them much earlier, today we can do the treatment without causing disfiguration,” Dr. Jain said.

State of the art equipment provides better treatment for breast cancer patients.

“Treatments that are starting to come out can detect cancer cells and avoid normal cells, minimizing side effects,” Dr. Jain said.

This CT Scan helps doctors better pin-point the cancer which then allows less healthy cells to be affected by radiation.

Innovations mean smaller incisions, faster treatments, less side effects, and more healthy time for many women. There are even medications to help prevent breast cancer.

“There are drugs like Tamoxifen and Roloxifen that can decrease the risk of developing breast cancer by nearly half in high risk patients,” Dr. Jain said.

Doctors say these new innovations are reasons for hope in one day finding a cure.

Dr. Jain says there are new gene based treatments looking to individualize treatment.
