Child Is Suffering From Serious Burns

A small, southern Kentucky child is suffering from very serious burns at a Cincinnati hospital.

Investigators say the 4 year old boy set himself on fire inside his Laurel County home on Campbell Road in the Lily community.

Phil Pendleton spoke with the Dustin Mederos family about what happened and the long road to recovery the child now faces.

The family of the 4 year old says they think this was just a terrible accident. Dustin Mederos somehow got a hold of his mother's lighter and set his shirt on fire.

The boy's mother says she was cooking Sunday night when Dustin got a hold of the lighter and was trying to burn a tag off his shirt.

But he caught his entire shirt on fire which caused second and third degree burns all over his body.

The injuries were so serious that a helicopter was called to take the boy to UK Hospital, but about 2 o'clock this morning Dustin was taken on to Shriner's Hospital in Cincinnati, which specializes in burns.

Dustin now has burns covering nearly 50 percent of his body and his mother says he will require a number of skin grafts.

He's expected to hospitalized for at least several weeks.

His mother says Dustin is heavily sedated and that he will undergo surgery on Tuesday.

Police were notified of the incident but the Laurel County Sheriff says they are not investigating.

Yes I have keep a eye on kids I've got a few myself I know the family and I know how they are with them kids. If she said she had her back turned then how did she see Dustin light that tag on fire couldn't she have took it away. If you all knew them the way I would you wouldn't be taking her side. I'm doing everything in my power to make sure them kids stay safe. I've tried to take care of this before something this bad happened but Laurel County would never do anything. Just pray for Dustin he got out of surgery last night and is listed in critical condition I haven't heard anything this morning. But you guys don't be judging unless you know the real facts like I do.

I FEEL FOR THIS LITTLE BOY. THE SAME HAPPEN TO ME AT 4 I WAS PLAYING WITH A LIGHTER AND MY PJS CAUGHT ON FIRE AND MY MOTHER HEARD ME AND GOT THEM OFF IN TIME. THE POINT OF MY STORY IS I'M 30 AND ACCIDENTS HAPPEN SO DON'T CRITICIZE THIS MOTHER LET'S JUST PRAY FOR THIS SMALL CHILD TO GET BETTER QUICKLY AND MAYBE OTHERS WILL NOT LET THEIR KIDS HAVE LIGHTERS.

My prayers go out for this little boy and his family. For those of you who are to quick to judge this mother...I have a 4 year old son. You cannot watch a child 24 hours a day, and 4 year olds are very active. No matter how good of a parent you are, you cannot always protect your child from accidents like this. If this happened to one of my children, I would be devastated, but not at fault. Please keep your opinions to yourself unless you know the whole story.
