UK's Possible New Basketball Arena Won't Be Named "Rupp"

University of Kentucky Basketball fans have called Rupp Arena home for more than 30 years. But some say it's outdated, and the Cats need a new place to play.

A well known marketing firm, IMG Group is working to convince University of Kentucky officials to let the firm build a new state of the art basketball arena.

The new arena would: seat 20,000 to 30,000 people, include skybox seats, better courtside seating arrangements, and state of the art screens and stadium sound systems.

Officials propose the new arena could be built directly across the street from Rupp Arena, where the High Street parking lot now is. The current Rupp Arena would stay where it is. Officials with the Lexington Center say that building could be renovated into additional convention center venues.

As to the name of the new arena, planners say they will likely not continue the tradition of naming the building after Adolph Rupp. The name of the building will likely be up for grabs to the highest bidder. Officials say it's a new trend for corporations to purchase the rights to sports stadiums and arenas.

Better yet, I think we should just take it old school and nail a peach basket to the side of a tree in the middle of campus.

Good lord! Ok lets start at the beginning shall we, Rupp is a widely used arena for KY basketball (GO BIG BLUE!!), concerts, Sweet Sixteen tournaments, conventions among other things when UK basketball isn't going on. We don't need two facilities, there isn't that much that happening at Rupp to not be able to accomodate everyone. How dare you say something like Rupp being a racist!! He wasn't a racist in the times when he coached 90% of the players were white, the man can't help who comes to play and who doesn't ,that doessn't make him racist, and to D Walker and Josh, it doesn't need to be named after anyone but Adolph Rupp so can you two drop the arguements already. Basically we don't need a new facility so tell IMG to imagine a new facility somewhere else.

Hey, I am a black man and I understand Rupp's racist past. Its no secret that Rupp was a racist and discriminated against black players, which makes it all the more merrier when I see Kentucky black players winning on the floor. When I see the success of black Kentucky players on Rupp arena floor it give me pleasure, because I know Rupp's past. I got the same pleasure when Barack Obama won the presidential elect. Its called the White House, but a success black man and his family is moving in come January 20, 2009. For year, black players were denied the privilege of playing for Kentucky and in Rupp. I say, 'keep the name and use it as motivation to keep on winning,' like Obama's motivation to become the first black American to win the presidential elect! It does not matter if its called Rupp or Krispy Kreme Arena. We as a nation have come to far to turn around and deny that black players enjoyed success on Rupp's floor and on his racist past.
