The deputy state fire marshal and the ATF are trying to figure out what caused a church fire in Pike County Thursday morning.

The fire damaged Main Street Church of Christ in Downtown Pikeville. No one was hurt in the fire and investigators say it does not look suspicious.

Crews believe the fire started in the ceiling of an area they are expanding.

A construction worker saw the smoke inside when he got there around 7:00 A.M.

Firefighters say finding it early saved the building. Crews contained the flames to the front part of the church. The ceiling is destroyed and some parts have smoke and water damage.

Church members say this will not hurt the congregation.

"We'll continue on. It's things like this that bring people closer together and lets you realize what material things are," said Keith Blackburn.

A pre-school also meets in the building. Church members say they are lucky the fire started when no children were inside.

The pre-school classes are cancelled until further notice. Church members plan to have services on Sunday.
