10,000 Chickens Killed In Barn Fire

PADUCAH, Ky.(AP) - A fire official says about 10,000 chickens were killed when a fast-moving fire destroyed a western Kentucky barn.

No people were hurt in the Friday fire, according to The Paducah Sun.

Richard Tapp, chief of the Reidland-Farley Fire Department, said the cause of the fire was unknown, but a propane heater may have been the culprit. He said no foul play was suspected.

Ray Atkinson, a spokesman for Pilgrim's Pride, said the barn was on farm owned by Elbert Castillow Jr., who contracted with the Pittsburg, Texas-based company.

Tapp said the fire was called in about 12:30 p.m. CST and spread quickly through the long, straight barn. He said efforts to put it out were also hampered because the closest fire hydrant was hundreds of yards away.

He said only a handful of chickens escaped.

NEWS FLASH! Chickens are rioting outside Kantucky Fried Chicken Franchises nationwide. There are reports of eggs being thrown at businesses in Corbin, Ky. Streets are ablaze with bonfires. Times look foul for Corbin, as police lines have been plucked back to the city limits in Knoxville Tn. Its a chickcastrophe. The Gov. has pulled the state national guard away from the Cincinnati border. They are now on their way to Corbin in an attempt to roastore order. He has promised the rioting chickens casinos in Corbin if they return to their coups peacefully. Their leader Road Island Red has called the Gov. just an old rooster who can't crow anymore.

"He said no foul play was suspected." What?? Hee, hee - Although, the pun was probably unintentional, I couldn't help but notice it when I read the comment. Sorry for the owners, workers and chickens though.

It certainly sounds as if this is one of those farms (like Tyson, but on a smaller scale) where the chickens are injected with hormones and are so crowded that they cannot even move. Greedy Fat Farms. To me, this is a deplorable and inhumane treatment of animals. Maybe the chickens are better off dead. I support local farms, but if I am correct, then I do not support this type of business. If I am wrong, I am very sorry for the business owner, and commend him/her for not operating business as Tyson operates.
