A 22-year-old Laurel County mother is behind bars after her 2-year-old son was found wandering her neighborhood completely naked with just a pair of shoes on. Amanda Nelson told authorities she had no idea the child was missing.

A resident in the same neighborhood who did not want to be identified, found the child and immediately brought him into his own home where he put some clothes on him and called police. Police say had that person not found the child when he did, they fear he could have died from exposure as temperatures were below freezing.

When authorities knocked on Nelson's door, they say she gave them a false name and also said that children "wander off," and that they should not be concerned. Social services investigated and placed the child with other family members.

Nelson is facing a felony charge of endangering the welfare of a minor and a misdemeanor charge of giving a false name to police. She is expected to be arraigned on Monday.

Relatives of Nelson declined an on-camera interview but say that she is a good mom and feel this has been blown out of proportion.

Babs - redeem herself for what?! The BABY was on the street with only SHOES on in freezing temperatures! If you were to read the other article about this woman, it says that she was ASLEEP when the baby wandered off. Give me a break. It also DOES NOT MATTER how long the child was outside nor how far from home the child was - the point is that the mother was wreckless enough to not care about watching her child; sleep was more important in this case!

come on people, give the girl a break, or at least a chance to redeem herself. sometimes children do things that no one expects them to do. I have two small grandchildren, one will not go without full clothing, the other you have to order to go completedly dressed and will disrobe at the drop of a hat. Maybe the girl was busy with something when the child wondered off. NO ONE KNOWS HOW LONG THE CHILD WAS OUTSIDE, HOW FAR FROM HOME THE CHILD WAS, this appears to be a case of the once again, guilt by public opinion.

Unfortunately Teacher is right. There aren't enough Foster/Adoptive families in the state of Kentucky for these poor, sweet, innocent, little children to be sent to. Any stupid jacka** can have a baby but to open your home if you aren't the biological parents, you'd have a better chance of breaking into the White House!!! The Family Unity framework needs to be redone, I know too many cases where the child is taken away and given to Mamaw or Papaw and the parents still have full access to them, it's ridiculous!!!

LISTEN BILL I HAVE RAISED 2 CHILDREN ONE IS THIRTY AND ONE 15 AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT MY KIDS NEVER GOT LOST OR JUST WONDERED OFF.....YOU ARE A COMPLETE F#@#%$# FOOL BILL.....SOCIAL SERVICES NEEDS TO ACT FAST AND REMOVE THIS CHILD FROM THIS FAMILY BEFORE SHE ENDS UP DEAD. A BABY CAN DIE IN 18 DEGREE TEMPERATURES FAST. I DON'T THINK IT WAS BLOWN OUT OF PROPORTION.......I KNOW SOMEONE WHO WILL TAKE THIS BABY AND GIVE IT A WONDERFUL LIFE FILLED WITH LOVE JOY AND SOMEONE CONSTANTLY WATCHING HER. I AGREE WITH DONNIE ANIMALS ARE VALUED MORE NOW THAN CHILDREN....IT MAKE ME SICK KEEP HER IN JAIL....

The little boy has more sense than the mother does...atleast he knew to put on a pair of shoes before walking on the cold ground!!!

This is completely ridiculous!! First of all, I don't really know of any two year old that can clothe himself - so that means that the two year old was naked even IN his home. What's even worse is that the child was outside in the cold weather without his mother even knowing it! I know where my children are at at all times, and I have three of them. It's great that the child was taken away and given to other family members, but does she have access to this child? I feel so sad for this poor baby. She will just get a slap on the wrist, and that sickens me.

A mother that lets her child run around naked is not much of a mother let alone one that lets him run off unsupervised outside for God knows how long in cold weather...and she didnt even know he was gone...SO SAD!!!

Unfortunately, even if children are taken by social services, they are put back into the same household with in months. I've seen it too many times in my short career. The state of KY works under the framework of "Family Unity".

Social Services should remove the child for good. Parents like that do not deserve their children.
