Obama Says US `Will Not Torture'

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama says the United States
"will not torture" as it detains terrorism suspects and works to
keep the country safe.
At the State Department, Obama said: "A new era of American
leadership at hand."
The president touted the orders he signed earlier in the day to
close the Guantanamo Bay detention center and ban the harshest
interrogation methods.
Obama says he's sending a signal to the world that in defending
liberty, America's actions "will be as just as our cause." He
says he wants to make sure that Americans "uphold fundamental
values as relentlessly" as they protect their security.
