Crews say ice is the biggest problem in the Big Sandy area. They spent all day clearing and salting roads and crews at the Martin County garage say the ice was so bad, they are sharpening the blades and filling up the trucks to go back out, because they say this is still dangerous.
People in Martin County say in just one day, the winter storm brought snow, ice, sleet, and freezing rain.
“A little bit of everything in one package,” Jay Hall, Snow Plow Operator.
People say it was tough walking, and even worse driving.
“It was pretty bad. The main roads were iced over and trees were laying in the roads. It was in pretty bad shape. Cars and stuff in ditches,” John Rainwater said.
Martin County Road Superintendents estimate two inches of ice are on the ground in some spots.
It is causing problems for snow plow operators.
“The ice is tough. It's really hard to steer on to keep it straight,” Hall said.
Workers say the ice is causing tree branches to fall and block roads in Martin, Floyd, and Johnson Counties.
Officials say the ice is too heavy on power lines and causing outages.
Officials say the ground temperature here is in the 20s, so they are worried about what will happen overnight, but say so far, no serious accidents are reported.
Crews say they will be out all night and all morning and ask drivers to be patient, but recommend just staying in tonight.
