The Versailles area has been hit hard by the winter storm. There are trees down all over, as well as power lines. At the height of the storm, there were more than 5,000 customers without power.

As of Wednesday night, there were still 500 to 600 homes still in the dark.

"We have been working non-stop in attempt to make sure our citizens have everything they need during this difficult time," said Fred Siegelman, Versailles Mayor.

Mayor Siegelman says the biggest problem has been downed power lines, which have shut down almost 20 roads, many of them major thoroughfares.

"We didn't think things were going to be as bad as they are," he said. "For us, this is worse than the ice storm of 2003."

Several shelters have been set up at the Woodford County Senior Citizen Center, The Falling Springs Recreational Center and the Christian Church in Midway.

Mayor Siegelman says it could be several more days before power is restored to all customers.
