The mother of a Hazard man charged in what police call a 'massive' child porn case says her son is sick, but not a monster.
We sat down with her in their home to hear her side of the story.

"A shock I'll never get over." That's how Leona Gay describes what she saw on the news Monday night: a child porn case centered around her son, Jimmy Darrell Gay ... one police say is growing more disturbing.

Hazard Police Captain James East says, "There is a possibility that there are some local children in here, due to some of the labeling on some of the CD's and floppy disks."

But Gay's mother is coming to his defense.

Leona Gay says, "I want people to know that Jimmy's not what they think he is. He'd do anything in the world for anybody, he'd never hurt nobody."

Leona Gay says her son's service in Vietnam led to a number of physical and mental problems ... and this collection started when he came home. She says the locks of hair are from friends he lost in battle.

"He brought all that garbage back from Vietnam, them boxes," she says.

Marie Luby asks: "When you saw these pictures, what did you say to him?"
Leona Gay replies: "Get rid of these things, get rid of them now. But he didn't do it."

But about ten minutes later, Leona Gay says she never saw the pictures and did not know what any of the tapes or disks showed.

Marie Luby asks: "How could you not see it, how could you not know it was here?"
Leona Gay replies: "Because I didn't mess in his business."

Gay's business is now the business of the FBI, who are in talks with the U.S. Attorney's office.

Leona Gay says, "He's a good boy, he's a good person, but he needs help."

She prays her son gets treatment, not jail time.

This is not Jimmy Darrell Gay's first arrest.
He was charged with impersonating an officer back in 1993, after allegedly using a sheriff's deputy badge to harass male students at an Eastern Kentucky University residence hall, where he worked.
EKU officials tell us Gay was accused of taking nude photos and videos of male students, and taking hair souvenirs.
Gay was fired the day of his arrest.
