Cash Strapped Fire Department Asks For Tax

Officials at a local volunteer fire department say they are having financial trouble.

West Knox Volunteer Fire Department serves about 8,000 households in knox and Laurel Counties, but officials say they are not taking in enough money to continue operating.

They are proposing a $50 tax.

"They're not crazy about adding it to a tax bill, but they're for giving us that money, because they're making an investment," Firefighter Darryl Baker.

The fire department lowers homeowners' insurance rates.

Officials say if the community doesn't want the tax, they will try to find other ways to raise money.

Obviously Denny in LaGrange has never had to work/volunteer for an organization that depends solely on donations. It is very difficult to pay the bills and buy fuel when things are tight and yet the state government will not let volunteer FD's or FD's that are taxing districts to raise their taxes, BUT they did just pass the liquor and cigarette taxes for the state coffers. The state officials are two-faced depending on the issue - KY politics as usual, not what is best for the residents.

THE SAD FACT IS THAT THE VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT GETS LITTLE OR NO SUPPORT FROM THE COUNTY OR THEIR COMMUNITY. EVERYONE COMPLAINS UNTIL THEY HAVE AN EMERGENCY AND THEN YELLS FOR HELP. IF YOU WANT TO HELP GO OUT AND SPEND YOUR OWN TIME, OWN MONEY FOR GAS TO HELP THE FIRE DEPARTMENT STAY IN BUSINESS. IT THEY GO OUT OF BUSINESS, THEN YOUR HOME OWNERS INSURANCE GOES UP.

Well just about all of us in these two counties voted for Mitch and Hal, looks like they would come to our rescue when we need funds.
