Cash Strapped Fire Department Asks For Tax

Officials at a local volunteer fire department say they are having financial trouble.

West Knox Volunteer Fire Department serves about 8,000 households in knox and Laurel Counties, but officials say they are not taking in enough money to continue operating.

They are proposing a $50 tax.

"They're not crazy about adding it to a tax bill, but they're for giving us that money, because they're making an investment," Firefighter Darryl Baker.

The fire department lowers homeowners' insurance rates.

Officials say if the community doesn't want the tax, they will try to find other ways to raise money.
