Governor's Cup Coach Banned For Life

A Russell High School teacher will never coach again after a ruling by the Kentucky Academic Competition Board Wednesday.

The board also excluded some Russell High's team scores in regional competition and put the school on probation until 2011.

Russell's district superintendent told the state that Matt Knupp manipulated a rule to gain a competitive advantage in the Governor's Cup competition. Other schools accused him of delaying the start of the testing.

Knupp reportedly claimed bad weather delayed his team, but some claim he was waiting for his star player to return from a college visit.

Because of the delay to the competition the results still aren't in. More than a dozen schools have filed formal complaints, and an complete investigation is being launched.

Knupp is suspended from the Russell Independent School District until the investigation is complete.

Confused, Morgan and Menifee Counties were in this region as well, and they made it the night before. The weather was only a light frost and from the reports, one student had a scholarship interview and that was the main reason for him delaying it. If the others could make it, they could have too.

Did his player get stuck because of the ice storm? Did he realize that delaying would be a case of cheating? I know other Governor's Cup competitons were delayed because of weather that affected just a couple of schools. A lot of scholarships are given out as a result of this competiton. If they have banned him for life, then he must have delayed because of the one student. I'd like to know more facts. Was his school favored to win? Did the coaches of the other schools discuss and plan their complaints as a group? This could be to remove his school and give theirs unfair advantages. There is a lot of stuff that goes on behind the scenes at these things. It all sounds a little fishy to me.

People from Russell have always looked down their nose and thought they were hot stuff around the northeast ky area. This proves what we have known for a long time. If you are cheating, dishonest, and unethical - you will eventually get caught up in your games and pay the price.

Hey Matt. We're praying for you man. For all of you out there pointing fingers and making accusations without know any facts, get a life. How many of you are perfect? Let you that is without sin cast out the first stone. Far too often we want point fingers and gossip but I remind you that there is always someone who hears these things and we are held accountable for the things we say and do. Matt has done so much for academics in Kentucky to make it a big deal in this state. Get the facts, wait for the truth to come out and stop being ignorant!
