UK Signee Changes His Mind

Coach John Calipari wasted no time on his first day as UK's head coach.

On Wednesday, after signing his contract and holding press conferences in Lexington and Memphis, Coach Cal hit the recruiting trail hard.

But 27 SPORTSFIRST learned Thursday that one signee will not be coming to the bluegrass.

Billy Gillispie had three signees coming in: Daniel Orton, Jon Hood and G.J. Vilarino, a guard from McKinney, Texas.

Vilarino is not coming. He'll receive a release from his letter of intent, possibly as early as Thursday.

On Thursday morning, our Rob Bromley talked with G.J.'s father, Gerry Vilarinio, who described a 15 to 20 minute telephone conversation he had with with John Calipari.

"I think we both agreed that it was probably best that we look an an opportunity that is more in line with what we wanted for G.J. When G.J. committed to Kentucky two years ago.. It was a scenario we had in mind that has obviously changed an awful lot since Coach Cal arrived. And after thinking it through and really talking to him, we both felt it was probably in G.J.'s best interest that we look for a different opportunity," Gerry Vilarino said.

John Calipari also visited with the family of Daniel Orton on Wednesday night.

Orton's father called it a nice visit but said with the coaching change, things are still up in the air.

Anonymous, it is not going to open up the door for better players. Players are going to be leary of coming to UK because of bad coaching changes and doing people wrong. Porter, and the rest are good players and they were developing. I hope they leave also and FIND BETTER schools. They need to go wherever Billy will be coaching at.

It seems strange to me that if its such a great honor to coach KY that it took making him the highest paid coach in college basketball to get saint Cal here. I feel bad for the players already on the team, because this new star that will out shine everything and everyone that has ever been at UK does not like them. I do not know why Barnhart does not think someone that has played at KY would be good enough to coach them. I also think the KY had the right to fire BillyG, but they should stop lieing about why and pay the man his 6 million. After all thats nothing compared to what they are paying Cal!!!!! I love UK basketball, but it is going to be hard to get over this. Maybe it would be easier if they fired Barnhart also. After all this is all his doing!

I have seen Billy G numerous of times driving himself around town. Again, that was just a rumor. I do not blame this player for changing his mind and I am glad the others have also. This man will have a hard time in Lexington because first of all, the deal was sneaky and UK did Billy G wrong.

If any player had a notion of coming to UK with this goofy- bird Gillespie, for a coach, it would be slightly stupid to NOT come with a real coach here now. I also think people like "April" and "viewer" are just short of having a full load!

why should UK have a coach who is not able legally to drive himself anywhere?? Good riddance to BG. I don't wish him bad but UK needs to keep up a better image. As for the new coach time will tell at least he's out there working on the recruit list! I wish UK and the team all the best!

Let Vilarino go to Memphis. He won't have to work for and education there now.
