More than 300 jobs could soon be available in Southern Kentucky.
Green Star Products wants to build electric vehicles in Williamsburg. Company officials say it's a prime location for their industry.
They needed certain criteria met in their search for a location, and they say Whitley County fits the bill.
"An available building with expandable property, a railroad spur, good work force and a local university that we could use for training everything was right here in Williamsburg," said Brooks Agnew, Vice President of Engineering for Green Star Products.
Green Star first built an electric car in the 1990's, but company officials say demand for electric vehicles is on the rise now. The company hopes to eventually make 30,000 vehicles a year.
"Certainly we're building from the frame up on a vehicle so there's a lot of jobs to be had," added Agnew.
Officials with Green Star Products say they already have their eye on an existing warehouse and are ready to begin production of the small electric pick-up trucks very soon. They say it's now up to the state and federal governments on whether or not the plant will come to Whitley County.
"We're excited about partnering with both the state and federal government to put the incentive package together to make this dream a reality for Williamsburg and Whitley County," said Judge-Executive Pat White.
Officials say the plant will not only benefit the local economy, but the state's effort to go green.
"It doesn't burn any fuel so it doesn't pollute. It also costs a lot less to operate. This vehicle here gets about 144 miles a gallon equivalent," said Agnew.
Officials say each truck created here would cost less than $25,000.
Green Star Products officials are planning to meet with Governor Beshear on Thursday and discuss possible incentives to bring the factory to Kentucky.
