A federal trial over mountaintop removal began Wednesday and could soon change the way coal is mined in Appalachia.
It could affect at least six hundred jobs during the next decade.
However, members of the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition say permits are being issued in southern West Virginia without following environmental laws.
The Army Corps of Engineers and Massey Energy say the reclamation process restores the temporary damage they create.
