Eastern State Hospital Likely Moving

A new proposal could mean big changes for the property now occupied by Lexington's Eastern State Hospital.

Eastern State is a historic facility. It was first organized in 1817. It's the second-oldest facility of its kind in the country.

But now, plans are in place to build a new Eastern State Hospital at the University of Kentucky's Coldstream Research Campus, off Newtown Pike near the interstate.

That would make way for the Bluegrass Technical College Campus to move to the hospital's old location at Newtown Pike and Fourth Street.

Gov. Steve Beshear made an appearance in Lexington Tuesday to push along the project.

Plans have been set for months and those plans received a shot in the arm Tuesday when the Urban County Council agreed to move forward with the proposal..

UK would get BCTC's old buildings on Cooper Drive as well as the additional parking.

The total project cost is around $130 million.

It will go in front of the council for a first reading on Thursday, and it will likely be given final approval next month.

Construction could begin in the spring of 2010 and could be completed by the summer of 2012.

At least this way, the graves wont have to be moved. Sounds like a happy medium.

This looks good on paper, but what about the cost? Whether they tear the old hospital or refurbish it where are they getting the money for all of the assbestos removal? This cost is going to be huge! While I agree the need for a hospital is way over due, I am not thrilled to hear that UK is going to take over the old TECH School. Before UK spends any more money on building projects they need to address the low pay and no raises for 2 years for staff. A 1-3% raise will not get it. UK needs to give staff a 5-7% raise to keep up with becoming a "TOP 20 RESEARCH INSTITUTION". Did you hear that Lee and Stevie?

These projects, coupled with the endless construction on college campuses makes me wonder where all the money is comiong from.If there were any real investigative reports in Lexington, they would follow the money trail
