UPDATED: Lexington Shooting Victim Dies

A Lexington woman, shot at a home on Bishop Drive this afternoon, has died of her injuries.

The woman has been identified as Lavena Gibson. She was shot a little after 5:00 pm Wednesday. Police have arrested the man they believe is responsible for the murder.

Police say Gibson and her boyfiend, Edward Stokley, had been arguing at the home on Bishop Drive. When the argument got out of control, witnesses say Gibson ran outside and Stokely followed. Witnesses also say that's when he gunned her down in the front yard of the home.

Stokely is now charged with murder as well as weapons and wanton endangerment charges.

I was a good friend of Vena's. My prayers goes out to both families, because both are in pain. To all women who are in an abusive relationship, I recommend that you get out when you can. Love doesn't hurt mentally or physically. Myself and another friend Barbara has been getting through this together. We knew both parties very well. God heals all and God will fight your battles.RIP my little sister. No more pain.

Lavena Gibson is my first cousin. My Aunt Veronica Jackson is her mother. My family and I would like to express our gratitude to the entire police force in Lexington for their responding to the scence of my cousin murder. We love and miss you Lavena RIP.

My heart and prayers go out to the Gibson family, this is so sad, I know what this family is going through because my father was gunned down on his own property by his neighbor in Rockcastle county in 2006, Thank God my father survived, he suffers daily, he has spinal cord damage and lots other medical problems, disabled now, the shooter never spent one day in jail either, my father was the third person that this man has shot, then in 2oo7 he moved (the shooter) to Pulaski county and in 2009 he shot a home with 15 people inside including chidren, luckily everyone survived, no jail time over that shooting either, these counties are pathetic when it comes to justice, hopefully the man that shot Gibson will rot behind bars. I pray for justice for this family.

RIP VENA. This is a tragedy and those of you discussing the amount of police on scene need to show some respect, a lovely, sweet person has died. You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

If only one cop showed up, you would be complaining of that too. People like you just find reasons to complain.
