High School Dance Team Hosts Local Candidates

The November election is just about two weeks away.

A high school dance team organized an event in Corbin and invited local candidates to speak.

Normally, you probably wouldn't associate a bake sale with voting or even campaigning with dancers, but after Monday night's fundraiser at Corbin High School, some teenagers say they understand the political process a little better.

Like senior Kayla Sams, most high school teenagers aren't old enough to vote and as a result don't pay much attention to politics.

"This new generation really needs to get up and quit being apathetic and choose who's going to run our country and our community," Morgan Williamson said.

Kayla Sams and Morgan Williamson are classmates and dancers for the Corbin Redhounds.

Their dance coach, Brenda Thomas, who is also a teacher, says she's concerned about the younger generation and their lack of interest in politics.

In order to politically motivate these teens, Thomas brought her dancers, the community, and parents together at a bake sale.

While the Redhounds raised money to dance, little by little they gained insight to the world of politics and their future.

Part of the money from the fundraiser is going to the dance team to help them pay for an upcoming competition.

The girls say the main goal is inspiring young voters and building a community that cares about local political elections.
