White Student To Represent Historically Black University

For the first time in the history of Kentucky State University, a Caucasian woman is voted Miss KSU.

KSU is called an HBCU, or Historically Black College or University.

Elisabeth Martin is a senior, majoring in English Education with a minor in International Studies, who also just happens to be a history maker as the 80th Miss KSU.

"My biggest hope is that everyone will embrace the diversity around them and get to learn from the people around them and just be who they are, but also learn from the people around them to," Martin said.

Now as the queen, Martin will travel to Atlanta in September to compete in the National Hall of Fame pageant.

It may also be a first when Martin's photo is featured in Ebony and Jet magazines.

Yes there are historically black colleges and universities (HBCU), magazines, pageants, etc. Don't forget, not long ago these were all needed because racist whites were fighting, literally and figuratively, to exclude people of color. Do you expect these successful business ventures to be disbanded? Remember, whites didn’t need to name their schools HWCUs because those with brown skin who were brave enough to integrate were often brutalized. There are and have never been, as far as I know, rules keeping whites from attending HBCUs. Chad, I think you should go for it or plan to send your kids! I think you’ll be embraced just as Miss KSU has been. This may be a stretch for you though considering Pine Knot’s 98% white demographic. I’m sure there’s some great property for sale there in Pine Knot. I’m sure you’re neighborhood would be thrilled to see the moving van pull up to unpack a proud, black, All-American military vet and his family. Congrats Miss KSU! Welcome to America 2009 chad!

Well, she DID win by 115 votes. It's not that she's not cute, she's just an average white girl from Kentucky. Smart girl. Can't believe this made the news. lol. Elections were brutal this year. :0)

Every does realize that the fact that we have black universities, magazines, pageants, etc. is truly racism. It never gets no coverage though unless its the other way though.

Are we not all human beings? Wouldn't it be just as racist to bar her because she was white? The students have obviously come a lot farther in accepting other races than some news organizations.
