It's a race that's been heating up, and getting personal and Thursday night, the candidates for the 84th District State Representative Seat met face to face at a political forum in Hazard.

For a race recently noted for it's negative campaign ads, the personal attacks stayed out of the debate.

Both incumbent Brandon Smith and challenger Scott Alexander tried to explain what they'll do for Perry and Harlan Counties in the next two years.

Facing off, in a rematch for state representative in this corner, republican incumbent Brandon Smith, and in this corner, challenger Scott Alexander. Alexander lost the 84th District house seat to Brandon Smith in the 2000 election, he's now fighting to get that seat back.

The campaign has turned bitter, with Smith questioning Alexander's actions on the general assembly floor and Alexander questioning Smith's social behavior, down to the price of his suits.

The two exchanged few words, just a quick handshake, and then both stuck to the basics addressing their concerns about our region including the link between jobs and drugs.

Smith says people with a drug addiction need to be able to find help at work...

"If you're suffering, the workforce is suffering, and I can promise you, their family is suffering and the whole community is suffering. So we're trying to stop the leapfrog effect and get them some help so we can put them back in the workforce," Smith said.

Alexander wants to help stop addition before it reaches the workplace.

"I think it is very appropriate that we spend money on preventative things, putting it in for the kids before they even start the drugs," Alexander said.

The candidates listed the same priorities; education, extending water lines, and jobs for the region.

If Smith wins on Tuesday, it will be his fourth straight term as state representative.

It's one of many races we'll be watching closely.
