Voters To Decide Future Of A Floyd County City

Just days away from this year's election, one Eastern Kentucky city is in jeopardy of no longer existing.

The citizens of Old Allen in Floyd County will vote this Tuesday on whether or not they should dissolve their city.

For the roughly 75 voters in Old Allen, this year's elections will not only decide their leaders, but decide their future as well. Two city commissioners say a signed petition ultimately got the vote for dissolution on this year's ballot. It's a heated argument in Allen that some residents are not taking lightly.

The city of Allen used to be a thriving community, as one resident put it. A city filled with a train depot, stores, and parks, a home to many people.

The city incorporated in 1913, but these days residents are wondering, should Old Allen be a thing of the past.

"It's a small town, but it's got character to it," said Allen resident Melodie Patton.

Voters in Old Allen will hit the booths this Tuesday to decide the future of their city. The question is should they dissolve, the city of Allen?

"Having a police officer here, makes you feel safe, more comfortable, and more secure. You can lie down and go to sleep at night," Patton said.

Some residents who want to keep their city say a town policeman and security guard, as well as street lights, are some of the benefits to keeping the city. They say they're afraid of being incorporated into the Prestonsburg city limits, which they say would take away from the closeness of the residents.

"It's always been the city of Allen, and it just doesn't seem right taking that away," Patton said.

But there are those in favor of dissolving Old Allen, including one man who preferred not to appear on camera. He said one policeman is simply not enough and should they dissolve the city, he feels county police would help to patrol the area.

Meanwhile Tuesday's voters will decide whether the city of Allen will dissolve.
