Time Is Winding Down On Our Mountain Harvest Food Drive

There's only a few days left to donate to our Mountain Harvest food drive.

Community action leaders say donations are desperately needed for families who need some extra help over the holidays.

For thousands of children who get most of their meals from their school cafeteria, officials say the holiday break could mean going hungry.

Administrators in Letcher County worry about what some of their students have to eat when they go home on Friday.

"When they come back in on Monday morning, sometimes it's evident that they are really hungry and they might not have had enough to eat," Cora Sturgill said.

So a Christmas break could mean two weeks without consistent hot meals.

"All children don't get three good meals a day through the week and also on the weekend," Sturgill said.

66 percent of students in Letcher County are on a free or reduced meal plan.

Superintendent Anna Craft says it hurts to see students who are hungry for more than just knowledge.

"We have to accept that as a normal role that we do have employees on the lookout for those needs that do impair children's ability to succeed at their highest levels," Craft said.

Administrators in Letcher County say a caring community helps many children when the cafeteria doors are closed.

But they say other school districts have even more hungry children, and less help.

You can help many of the children who might not have enough food at home during the holidays by donating to our Mountain Harvest.

You only have until December 15th, that's this Friday, to drop off donations at your local community action agency or in a designated cart at a local grocery store.

Nine agencies covering 31 counties are participating.
