Phone & Internet Services Are Coming Back Online

Phone and internet services are coming back across parts of eastern Kentucky, but for much of the day it was unavailable for some residents and businesses, and those providing emergency services as well.

Crews have been working for hours to repair a cut fiber optic cable around the Red Bird River near the Clay and Leslie County line.

It's a severed wire that phone company officials say cut off long distance telephone and internet services in Hazard, as well as Evarts in Harlan County.

It's one cut cable that proved to be quite a headache.

There's an old cliche' saying, you don't appreciate what you've got, till it's gone.

A lack of long distance telephone and internet services certainly proved that in some parts of Eastern Kentucky Wednesday.

"What it done was isolated us, no long distance service. All the circuits feeding from London are down," Terry Cuddy said.

Officials with Windstream, a local telephone provider, say their fiber optic cable was cut around 3pm Wednesday, possibly by vandals looking for copper.

"Thought maybe it was copper, probably going to steal it, saw it wasn't copper and they left it," Cuddy said.

What the alleged vandals did leave, however, was a mess for emergency workers to deal with.

Officials say 911 services continued to operate without problems, but the lack of phone and internet service did slow down some agencies and cause delays.

"We may be off just a little, but we're still working at full capacity," Bobby Danner, KSP Dispatcher, said.

Emergency room workers who normally work 8 hour shifts, say they'll be working 16 hours Wednesday night, after what they described as a "Crazy, pull your hair out, kind of day!"

One worker said out of town doctors couldn't call in information for their patients and said they were having trouble keeping track of how many beds they needed for all their patients.

In fact, WYMT couldn't get permission from the right people to bring a camera inside the hospital because the phones were down.
