WYMT Becomes A Victim Of Copper Theft

Police say copper theft is a growing trend throughout our region and now that trend is hitting a little too close to home.

Police say someone stole copper wire from the WYMT transmitter site causining more than $2,000 in damage.

Police say whoever stole the copper had to cut through a fence to get to the site.

They say pieces of metal were found nearby, which they believe were used to pry into the site.

The transmitter is located on top of Buffalo Mountain, just a few miles from WYMT.

"This is getting more and more common around here, I know Windstream has had some stolen, CSX Railroad has had cable stolen. What people are doing is they're taking it stripping it down recycling it for money," Trooper Jennifer Sandlin said.

WYMT engineers say the theft should not affect the air signal unless the tower is struck by lightening.

Police say other transmitter sites located on the mountain were also damaged.
