He was a son, a husband, a basketball coach, and a soon-to-be father, but on New Year's Day, 27 year old Michael Alex died in a Breathitt County car accident.
An Oregon native, Michael Alex had been working at Riverside Christian School with his new wife for only six months before he was killed.
Thursday's memorial was a chance for his new friends and family in Kentucky to show his family from Oregon just what kind of impact he'd already made in their lives.
"He wanted to enjoy life, he wanted everybody else to enjoy life, and he did. and he helped us enjoy life," Ernie Roberts said.
"He was the prince that every princess was waiting for," Tayaka Alex said.
Newlyweds Michael and Tayaka Alex began their journey to Riverside Christian School just six short months ago.
In that time their new family quickly grew larger.
"That's one thing that helps me be stronger, and I can't really be weak having a baby," Tayaka said.
While their daughter is due in May, pain has frequented the Alex family, who lost another son in another car accident several years ago.
"I dedicated a lot of my time, effort and money into learning as much about accident reconstruction as I possibly could. Now here we are again," Michael Alex said.
But it's listening to those he touched and seeing the impact he had on others that lets them know more Michael Alex's life.
A University of Louisville Professor, Jeffrey Jack also died in the crash.
His wife and two daughters were injured, but WYMT was told by a family friend they are all improving.
