Secondary Roads Trigger Most School Closings

Several of schools are still closed Tuesday.

There wasn't a spot of snow on Highway 80 in Knott County Monday afternoon, which may leave many wondering why school was closed.

Trish Short, a Knott County bus driver says many county roads are covered with ice which makes driving a bus very dangerous.

"People don't realize, they get out and they see 80 is clear, but that's not where the kids are," Short said.

"Instead of taking a chance and a risk, it's always better to make up a day. The last thing we want to do is get a child hurt," Tommy Hall said.

Along with icy roads, Short says it's not safe for kids to be standing out in the cold waiting for the bus and on snowy days, buses usually run five to ten minutes late.
