An eastern Kentucky mayor says some city council members are trying to take power away from him.

Council members in Prestonsburg called a special meeting Monday night.

Members of the Prestonsburg City Council say they want more input and say they want to be the one's who appoint committees that make recommendations for the city, but that's normally a job the mayor does.

Ordinance three-2007 caused quite a stir.

The mayor of Prestonsburg, Jerry Fannin, says through ordinance Three-2007 city council members want to appoint committees which make recommendations for the council, but for years, that's been the mayor’s job.

“Every time we have an election and new people come in, the mayor will appoint them to some kind of committee and he will ask them if they want to be changed and if they say yeah, he will try to accommodate them,” Kelly Moore said.

But since the election, the mayor says many council members aren't happy and they're trying to take power from him.

“This demanding stuff don't work on my side or their side either one,” Mayor Jerry Fannin said.

Monday night five of the eight city council members called a special meeting for a vote on the issue.

“The council has more input than it did before and I think it's a good move,” Gorman Collins Junior said.

The ordinance was passed, so now council members will appoint committees, but the mayor says he believes this will be a setback for the city.

“I think it's going to put Prestonsburg in the next two years, if things don't change, we're not going to accomplish a whole lot because we're not working together,” Mayor Fannin said.

Mayor Fannin says he has ten days to veto the vote.

The next city council meeting is scheduled for next Monday.
